"THE brightest stars from across Scotland’s licensed trade were honoured at this year’s SLTN Awards.
Scotland’s top operators, staff and venues were celebrated at the glittering awards ceremony hosted by comedian Kevin Bridges in Glasgow last Thursday (November 6).
Mario Gizzi and Tony Conetta, the directors of Di Maggio’s Group, whose outlets include Anchor Line, Barolo Grill and Amarone, were presented with the SLTN Award for Industry Achievement, in association with Maxxium UK.
Accepting the award, Gizzi said: “Tony and myself are very much the tip of the pyramid. You see us standing here, but below us is a management team of staff and an infrastructure that’s been built up over 30 years. We wouldn’t be standing here if it wasn’t for them.”
In addition to the accolade of the SLTN 2014 Award for Industry Achievement, the Di Maggio’s Group also achieved a ‘highly commended’ nod as Independent Multiple Operator of the Year, sponsored by Smirnoff.

Di Maggio’s is a family-run business that has served thousands of satisfied diners across Scotland for nearly three decades. In the early 1980s Mario Gizzi went into partnership with his uncle, Giuseppe “Joe” Conetta, with a vision to introduce delicious and affordable Italian-American dining to Glasgow. The development of the Di Maggio’s winning formula was driven by the two founders until the 1990s when Joe handed the mantle to his son, Tony, who had first-hand experience of the restaurant floor having worked in the business as a kitchen porter and waiter. Today Di Maggio’s continues to grow and prosper with cousins, Mario and Tony, at the helm.
Even though they are in charge of the company Mario and Tony believe maintaining an active presence is essential. You can often see them in and around the Di Maggio’s restaurants casting a watchful eye over the tables, speaking to customers, and even handing out “I love Di Maggio’s” badges to kids.

The first Di Maggio’s restaurant was opened in 1985 in Glasgow’s West End. A second Di Maggio’s opened a year later in Glasgow’s Shawlands followed by a steady expansion in the coming years across the city with locations in Royal Exchange Square and Theatreland. Today you will find Di Maggio’s across Scotland with further restaurants in Hamilton, Airdrie and East Kilbride.
